  • LEARN THE SECRETS OF PUPPETRY!

Since 2005, we have conducted Summer Camp in affiliation with various local art agencies and studios. Each year has been an exciting time with our camp members as they tried their hand at the art of puppetry. This year we have developed a four part instruction over a two week period. Both sessions will include either a morning snack or an afternoon snack. The instructors and descriptions are as follows:

Basic Puppetry Course (6-10 Years Old):

This four module camp for this age bracket will provide students challenging fun as youngsters build puppet characters, learn to operate them and perform for parents and family. They will be given basic shells on which to add character detail, learning how each look changes the character and develope it in context of a story they themselves will produce. In tandem with our Theater Skills module and Art & Design Module they will bring all their efforts into one culminating event on the last day of camp for your delight and enjoyment. Session is from 8:00 am to Noon and includes a morning snack break. Tuition for the two weeks is $250, a $10 non refundable registration fee and $12.50 for their camp t-shirt.

Puppety Arts Intensive (11-17 Years Old):

Older students will develope unique characters in the style of theater in the black.  Full bodied puppets that will be built to personify total  movement while the student puppeteers, dressed in black, are invisible to the audience while the puppets are revealed in a veil of light. In this style homage to the Bunraku Puppetry of Japan, the students are challenged to perform at least two to a character  and learn to coordinate their movements as one. With the Arts & Design and Theater Skills Workshop, students will take the extra step beyond standard theater. Session is from 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm and includes a morning snack break.Tuition for the two weeks is $250, a $10 non refundable admin fee and $12.50 for their required camp t-shirt.

Richard Diaz (Master Puppeteer)

Belinda Diaz (Puppet Designer)

Co directors PPP&D

Perpetual Puppets Production & Design, co directed by Richard & Belinda Diaz, has been performing, teaching and making visual arts contributions to the San Antonio area for over 7 years now. Belinda Diaz, a graduate of Mansfield Business School, has apprenticed under her husband Richard for some 5 years before she became an accomplished puppet designer in her own right. Principal artist and master puppeteer of 38 years, Richard Diaz studied puppetry arts at the University of Connecticut in the early eighties including some apprenticeship abroad. While Richard focuses on the more classical puppetry art disciplines (marionettes, rod puppets, giant effigy puppets etc), Belinda's focus has been on muppet type Hand & Rod, Hand & Mouth. Together they have created some memorable characters that have delighted audiences all over San Antonio.

MODULE I DESCRIPTION

You've seen them! Now learn how to make them! In this module students in each age bracket will be instructed on puppet and character design. Each age group will have its own challenges as they learn to adapt various physical atributes to the developement of a specific type of character that will be in included for the final production. We will look at different types of puppets from around the world and see how we can adapt those styles to our personal projects. Costuming aspects will also be explored as we finalize the look of everyone's character actor

MODULE II DESCRIPTION

Learn how to make your puppets come alive like they do on TV. Movement and manipulation of the puppet is the focus of this module. Students on both levels will learn to warm - up and prepare for the use of their puppets.  They will act upon their characters to bring out the most liveliest and realistic performance they can. To do this, they will be challenged to emulate techniques of movement, speech,  and body language, many of which we take for granted on a daily basis. From subtle to obvious expression, the goal is to estabilish credible mannerism that will be further polished in module IV.
